Fernando Alonso is one of Formula One’s greatest drivers of all time. He has won 32 Formula One events and won the championship twice which is why he is regarded as one of all time greats. In 2017, he stirred the international racing scene when he decided to compete in the 2017 Indy 500. Alonso competed very well in the event and led for 27 laps which were the third most of any driver in the event. But, he had engine problems and a couple of miscommunications and he ended up finishing in 29th which was disappointing.
Ever since he competed in the 2017 Indy 500, the racing world has been anxiously awaiting his return to the pit of American racing. Alonso decided to retire from Formula One in 2018 and everyone, including Alonso himself, is wondering what he is going to do next.
In a recent Twitter video, Alonso and NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson can be seen talking over the phone joking about Alonso’s new free time since his retirement. This seems to be a trailer to a lead up to a crossover event; similar to the one Lewis Hamilton and Tony Stewart had back in 2011 when the drivers jumped into each other’s cars to showcase the differences in each sport.
Alonso had this to say about NASCAR: “It’s definitely another series that is attractive, as all the motorsport series, they have their good things and their bad things and their appeal sometimes. We know NASCAR is one of the great series in motorsport. Obviously, I never tested the car. I have zero information about the championship, the rules, so it’s a very difficult thing to judge. Let’s see what will happen there.”
Alonso is known for his crossovers so he easily could end up competing in the 2019 Daytona 500, which would be great for the sport and we hope that we can get similar crossover events in NASCAR where drivers can go compete in Formula One. Alonso has great respect for NASCAR and its popularity and there is a great chance he will be drawn to the majesty and grandeur of the Daytona 500.
Alonso has not made his mind up on anything yet as he states here, “No, not really, what I will do next year is more based on how it makes me feel happy, and trying to make something special—as I said many times, being the best driver in the world, of motorsport, not only F1.”
“I’m checking a couple of things, and hopefully by October or something like that, in one month’s time, I hope to get everything done, and say to you…If I feel I can be ready and competitive, I will accept the challenge. If I see it as too difficult I will postpone the challenge for later on. But it’s something that I need to consider in a wider range,” Alonso concluded.
Hopefully, Alonso can make a decision by the end of October so that the racing world can be prepared for whichever 2019 event he decides to compete in. If his last appearance at the Indy 500 back in 2017 is an indication of anything, we are in for one wild ride for 2019. Alonso had a test session with Andretti Autosport in September which points to Alonso choosing Indycar. This would be the most natural progression of the driver’s career as Indycar is much more similar to Formula One than NASCAR.
One thing is for sure, the racing world will be awaiting Alonso’s next move. What race do you think Alonso will be competing in 2019? Let us know in the comments!
